John grew up in the poverty-stricken bayou country of Louisiana. Through family connections, he and his sister Peggy were sent to a local Catholic school. But when fourteen-year-old John began asking honest spiritual questions that challenged the priest, the response was anger—not answers. Still searching for truth, John asked the nuns for a Bible. They ignored his repeated pleas.
Gifted in music, John found escape in the saxophone. By fifteen, he was playing in bars and dance halls, chasing excitement and leaving behind the spiritual longing that had once stirred his heart. But God wasn’t finished with him yet.
After graduating, John took work in the Gulf of Mexico’s oil fields. On his very first rig, an explosion tore through the platform—threatening to end his life. God spared him, awakening in John a desire to study the Bible. Yet his life continued to spiral through hardship, travel, and temptation. Work took him to Iran, where he met and married a young woman. But once they returned to America, worldly distractions eroded their marriage and faith. When illness struck, and his wife’s infidelity was exposed, anger overtook reason—and tragedy followed.
In the wake of blood, arrest, and conviction, John faced what seemed to be the end of his story. But in the darkest cell, the voice of God still called: “Follow Me.”
