We partake in the communion service because this is how Christ asked us to remember Him. When Christ humbled Himself and one by one washed the feet of His disciples, He taught them an amazing lesson of selflessness and humility. Then, He gave us loving and encouraging instruction, “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you” (John 13:15).
“This action opened the eyes of the disciples. Bitter shame and humiliation filled their hearts. They understood the unspoken rebuke, and saw themselves in altogether a new light. So Christ expressed His love for His disciples. Their selfish spirit filled Him with sorrow, but He entered into no controversy with them regarding their difficulty. Instead He gave them an example they would never forget” (The Desire of Ages, 644–645).
This booklet is chapter 72 of The Desire of Ages.
